Shedding his clothes, he revealed an unusual choice of attire beneath a crop top paired with short shorts. This bold move was Latham’s way of making a strong statement about an issue he felt passionately about.

At the meeting, Ira Latham stated, “Under the proposed policy, this would be considered appropriate for the classroom.” He removed his shirt and pants at the podium to underscore his argument. The gathering was convened to deliberate on adopting a more lenient dress code that the Higley Unified School District had initiated. These discussions had been underway since May, with most of the school district’s community well-informed about the anticipated changes. The new policy stipulates that “clothing must conceal all private body parts and/or undergarments and must not be transparent. While incidental visibility of undergarment waistbands and/or straps under clothing is allowed, undergarments themselves cannot be worn as outer clothing.”

To vividly illustrate his argument, the father donned a crop top and short shorts, showcasing attire deemed acceptable under the new guidelines. He highlighted, “Under the proposed policy, this would be appropriate in a classroom.” This marked a significant departure from the dress code established in 2001, with the updated regulations permitting students to reveal their chest, abdomen, and midriff areas. Latham, who has four children attending schools within the district, expressed concern that the revised dress code could detract from his children’s educational experience. He articulated, “As a parent, I anticipate that the district will enforce policies that not only ensure my children can attend class in a secure environment but also minimize unnecessary distractions.” To demonstrate the practical implications of the new dress code, he chose to wear an outfit that complied with the updated regulations to the board meeting. “Because I have no other way to express my concerns about this policy, I’ll provide a visual example,” he declared before undressing.

He then critiqued the policy’s suitability for educational settings, adding, “Now, if you ask me, this is not appropriate for a board meeting. If your dress code permits this in a classroom, it fails to foster a safe and focused learning environment,” highlighting his frustration with the policy’s potential impact on school decorum. Nevertheless, the governing board president, Schulz, was not swayed by these arguments, highlighting that the concern primarily affected female students, who are more likely to wear crop and tank tops. Schulz further argued that educators should prioritize teaching over policing student attire, such as measuring the lengths of their shirts, which could also make female students feel uneasy. Echoing Schulz’s sentiments, another governing board member, Amanda Wade, concurred.

Wade expressed, “These are kids. They’re not at a job, and while I recognize that attending school is essentially the most significant job they have at this stage, we need to grant them some freedom.” This perspective underscores a call for a balance between enforcing dress codes and allowing students a degree of personal expression. Although Latham was able to fuel the debate regarding the proposed dress code plan and make a compelling argument, the school board ultimately decided to update the policy with a 3-2 vote.
