If you see this in your yard, do not break it under any circumstances
Purslane, or Portulaca oleracea, is a herb native to Asia which is spread worldwide. Although many consider it just weed, it is in fact a plant that is edible and extremely nutritious.
Among the rest, this plant is rich in antioxidants, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and beneficial plant compounds. Being full of beta-carotene, the pigment responsible for the reddish color of its stems and leaves and an antioxidant believed to reduce the number of free radicals in your body, purslane lowers the risk of cancer.
It is also helpful for supporting your cardiovascular system as it has the highest-recorded levels of omega-3 fatty acids of any land-based plant.
Among the rest, purslane is a great source of calcium and magnesium, two minerals that help keep your bones strong and healthy.
By including purslane in your diet, you can give your overall health a significant boost.
Purslane, which also goes by the names pigweed, little hogweed, fatweed and pusley, contains about 93% water and is similar in taste with spinach. It is also very crunchy and juicy. Purslane can be eaten cooked or raw and it is a fantastic addition to salads, soups, and stews.
What’s great about this plant is that it can be planted in dry, hot regions, as well as gardens of low maintenance. This means purslane practically grows without any help at all and can be even spotted on sidewalk cracks as it easily adapts to harsher conditions.
However, although it doesn’t require any special conditions or perfect soil, this plant’s impressive root system plays a vital role in improving soil health and preventing erosion. So, not only it would beautify your garden, but it would also naturally enhance the fertility and stability of your soil.
The United States Department of Agriculture refers to it as of a “noxious weed,” and in some regions its cultivation is limited or prohibited.
Besides being a perfect addition to your diet, purslane can attract beneficial insects to your garden. Bees and butterflies are just some of the pollinators that are drawn to its beautiful flowers.
It truly looks like purslane is the perfect plant that would made a valuable addition to your diet and to your garden.
