“Or option two: I release all of this documentation—the bankruptcy, the lies, everything—to your social circle. And I contact the bank about potential fraud regarding the loan you took out using Lauren’s wedding as justification.”
“You wouldn’t,” my mother whispered.
“Try me.” I met her eyes without flinching. “I’ve spent my entire adult life trying to earn your respect, trying to prove I was worthy. But I don’t need your approval anymore. I know who I am. The question is whether you’re willing to finally acknowledge it.”
They read the contract in silence. I watched my father’s hands shake slightly as he turned the pages.
“If we sign this,” he said finally, “what happens to the bank loan?”
“That’s between you and the bank,” I said. “But I will personally review the circumstances and, if appropriate, recommend a modified payment plan based on your actual financial situation. Not because you’re my parents, but because it’s the right thing to do.”
My mother looked up at me, tears streaming down her face. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “Claire, I’m so sorry.”
“Are you sorry for what you did,” I asked quietly, “or sorry that you got caught?”
She couldn’t answer.
My father picked up the pen with a heavy sigh and signed the document. My mother followed, her signature shaky and small.

Maria’s eyes widened. “Claire, that’s your entire profit for the month.”
“I know.” I looked at my grandmother’s letter, still clutched in my hand. “But it’s what she would have wanted.”
Later that night, after most guests had left, Lauren found me in the courtyard.
“Thank you,” she said simply.
“For what?”
“For not letting them destroy your kindness.” She wiped her eyes. “After everything they did, you still helped them. You gave them a way out.”
“I didn’t do it for them,” I said. “I did it because Grandma Rose asked me not to become cruel. And because you deserve to start your marriage without your parents losing everything.”

“I’d like that,” I said.
