“Tell her I’m in meetings all day,” I said.

“She says it’s important. Family emergency.”

I almost laughed. “There’s no emergency. Please escort her out.”

Ten minutes later, my assistant buzzed me. “Your mother left this for you.” She held up the Cartier box.

I didn’t even open it. “Donate it to charity. Get a receipt for tax purposes.”

The Question Everyone Asks

People always ask if I ever reconciled with my family.

The answer is no.

Not because I’m vindictive or because I enjoy their suffering. But because you can’t build authentic relationships with people who only value you when you’re useful to them, who only respect you when you have status they can benefit from.
