One week before the gala, I spent all day at the venue coordinating final setup. Where the registration table would go, how the stage would be positioned, where to put the donation display. The event coordinator had questions every fifteen minutes.

We walked out into the cool evening air. His car was indeed waiting—a black sedan with a driver who opened the door for us.

As we pulled away from the venue, I looked back one last time at the building where I’d just spent three weeks of my life organizing an event where my own son had tried to humiliate me for a laugh.

And I smiled.

Because Richard was right. I did matter. My work mattered. And I was done letting anyone—even Brandon—make me forget that.

My phone buzzed. A text from Brandon.

Mom, please call me. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. I can explain.

I looked at it for a long moment, then turned off my phone and slipped it into my purse.
