Red Skelton serves up a heapin’ helping of good old-fashioned laughs
Red Skelton bounces onto the stage, that familiar goofy grin plastered across his face, and I’m instantly transported back to my childhood living room. The audience erupts in laughter and applause, and I can’t help but join in. It’s like greeting an old friend – one who never fails to brighten your day.
I remember rushing through my homework every Tuesday night just so I could plop down in front of our old Zenith TV for “The Red Skelton Show”. Mom and Dad would join me, and for that hour, all our worries would melt away. Red had a gift for making everyone feel like part of his extended family.
His cast of characters were like old pals – good ol’ Clem Kadiddlehopper with his country bumpkin charm, Freddie the Freeloader and his silent antics, or the lovable drunk Willie Lump-Lump. Each one was etched into our hearts, bringing a different flavor of laughter to our lives.
“Good night, and may God bless…”
Red’s comedy has always been a breath of fresh air. In a world that seems to get rougher by the day, his clean, wholesome humor reminds us of simpler times. He doesn’t need shock value or crude jokes to get a laugh – just good old-fashioned wit and a hefty dose of heart. I find myself wishing it could go on forever. But I know what’s coming – that moment when Red will look out at all of us, a twinkle in his eye, and say those words we’ve all come to treasure: “Good night, and may God bless.”

Watching Red Skelton perform brings back all those warm memories. His humor is still as sharp as ever, but there’s something special about seeing him in person. The way he interacts with the audience, those little asides and improvised moments – it’s comedy magic, pure and simple.
