Note: we are republishing this story which originally made the news in April 2016. In an unexpected and heartwarming turn of events, a group of children and adults became local heroes during an Easter egg hunt in Capel, Surrey. They brilliantly assisted the poIice in capturing two suspected burglars on the run, and the story reads like a real-life Enid Blyton adventure. As the group of 30 children and adults embarked on their traditional Easter egg hunt, the day took an unexpected twist. High above them, the National PoIice Air Service (NPAS) helicopter circled the area. Little did they know that this seemingly ordinary day would turn into an extraordinary collaboration with law enforcement. The Surrey poIice had summoned the NPAS helicopter following a report of intruders at a disused building. At first, the children and parents found the presence of the poIice helicopter entertaining, but soon they realized that they were witnessing a genuine poIice pursuit.
A force spokesman described how the children swiftly formed a massive arrow on the ground in the middle of a ploughed field. Their purpose was clear: to guide the helicopter in the direction of the fleeing suspects. The helicopter crew then relayed this critical information to officers on the ground, leading to the swift apprehension of the suspects. NPAS Sergeant Paul Sochon commended the group of Capel residents for their daring initiative. He compared their swift and ingenious actions to something you might find in an Enid Blyton adventure. Their resourcefulness proved invaluable in aiding the poIice and ultimately led to the suspects’ capture.
The NPAS crew, deeply grateful for the children’s vital assistance, landed nearby to personally thank them for their pivotal role in the incident. To show their appreciation, the officers even shared some chocolate treats with the young heroes. It was a delightful surprise and a well-deserved reward after a busy shift. The heartwarming story doesn’t end there. Thanks to the quick actions of the children and residents, the poIice arrested two suspects – a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old man – on suspicion of burglary in connection with the incident. These men have been released on bail and are awaiting further inquiries until May 13.
